Port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Feasibility study – Optimisation of cargo handling
With a cargo handling capacity of over 95% of the country’s international trade, the port of the city of Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s most important port. The port has eleven deep water berths, of which four are used for container operations and seven for general cargo operations. The main objective of the project was to analyse the technical, financial and environmental feasibility of the most suitable approach to modernising cargo handling procedures at Berths 1 to 7.
Elements of the feasibility study:
- Elaboration of both ad-hoc and long-term improvement measures for handling of bulk, mixed and ro-ro (vehicular) cargo
- Optimisation of the overall port layout
- Planning and design of new access roads and a railway connection
- Planning and design of bulk handling facilities and conveying systems for grain, fertiliser, cement clinker and other materials
- Planning and design of new warehouses, vehicle parking areas and other open storage facilities
- Elaboration of Public Private Partnership (PPP) options for the mixed cargo and bulk cargo quay
