Construction of new outer and inner dike, Germany

Ecological site clearing for the dike in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park.

In the context of renaturalization of the outer coast of the peninsula Zingst two measures are required for maintaining the appropriate flood protection level: the construction of a new sea dike to stretch out mainly along the road leading to Pramort (length approx. 12.5 km) and reinforcement of the lagoon dike over a length of 6.3 km. For this purpose site clearing is necessary on an area of altogether 105 ha, comprising also the storage areas. All woody plants existing in this area are to be completely re-moved including their roots and stumps.

A 2.75 km long section of the new line leads through the forest Osterwald (see respective figure) where, as an additional measure for obtaining a subsoil with a higher bearing capacity, the inherent organic soils (volume: approx. 83,000 m³) are removed on an area of 19.25 ha altogether. A separation of organic soil and wood is required for reasons of recycling respectively disposal since on-shore haul-away transport would only be possible through the seaside resort Zingst. The road network available here (road width in most cases less than 4 m) and the predominantly tourism-related exploitation of the adjacent premises stands con-trary to these requirements which means that other solutions have to be found.

Leistungen des Projektteams:

  • implementation of the requisite conditions of the official zoning approval (2003)
  • setting-out of the construction site
  • recording and evaluating the existing area vegetation (tree cover) to be cleared
  • elaboration of the recycling concept
  • technical planning of site clearing works up to the stage of contract award
  • data keeping in a Geographic Information System (ArcView 3.2)
  • rendering of services in 2002 / 2003
