Flood control reservoir Niederpoebel, Ore Mountains
Preventive flood protection

The Niederpöbel flood control reservoir was constructed to protect the communities on the Red Weisseritz river in the Eastern Erz Mountains of Saxony. The reservoir’s retaining structure was designed as a rock-fill embankment dam with a bitumen-sealed core. The basin, created as an ecological, generally passable dry basin, will only fill with water during a 10-year flood event (HQ10). Inros Lackner’s role in the project included the planning and design of water management and construction-related aspects, and managing the planning permission process. The basin is located in an ecologically sensitive area with natural flora/fauna habitats, nature and landscape protection areas and Section 26 biotopes.

Flood retention reservoir – main statistics:

  • Retention capacity:  approx. 1.14 million m3
  • Dam height above base: approx. 28.5 m
  • Crest length: approx. 185 m
  • Length/width retention area: 1.15 km/~140 m
  • Catchment area: 12.1 km2
  • Designed capacity in case of flooding: 10.9 m3/s
