National Convention Center
Hanoi. Vietnam

Useable area: 60,000 m2

This multifunctional conference center set new technical standards and was opened after a construction period of just two years. It was planned and designed in association with the Hamburg architecture firm von Gerkan, Marg & Partners (gmp). The scope included structural and infrastructure design and the development of an integrated, “invisible” technical building equipment system of the highest quality. Complex static design systems were implemented, e.g. for the partitionable, theatre-like main meeting hall with up to 3,500 seats, and for the roof structure. Buildings in tropical locations, such as the NCC, also place very high demands on their building services.

Reserves must be maintained to cover power outages or disruptions to drinking water supplies, and extreme conditions (rainfall during monsoons, wind strength during typhoons and ground movements during earthquakes) must be considered. A key requirement was to ensure that the building could always continue to function, completely independently, for three days, even if the city of Hanoi’s entire supply and disposal systems are completely disrupted.
