The “Kalte Bode” flood control reservoir in the Harz region of Germany entered into service again in September 2010. It was constructed between 1952 and 1957, and provides flood protection while also serving as a preliminary sedimentation facility for the water that will be stored downstream at the Rappbode dam providing drinking water. With a water retention level of 23 m, the structure, built in accordance with the German standard DIN 19700, is one of the country’s larger dams. The equipping of the dam with a hydroelectric power plant, with a capacity of 200 MW, included the renewal of the two base discharge pipes and the rehabilitation of the base discharge vault.
